Crowns: An Afternoon of Hats at the Isle of Wight County Museum

Hats come in all shapes and sizes with varying adornments. It matters not if you call it a beret, chapeau, fez, bowler, pillbox, sunbonnet, derby, kepi or helmet. It’s still headgear, and it has a long history. On Saturday, June 30, in conjunction with Smithfield’s Olden Days Festival, the Isle of Wight County Museum will host Crowns at the Isle of Wight County Museum: An Afternoon Program Dedicated to Hats! Drusilla Pair of the Hampton Roads Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society will give lectures at noon and 2 p.m. Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite hat. There will be a hat parade and prizes for the best examples. The event is free and will also feature exhibits, video clips and refreshments.
